Michigan Municipal League Hosts Session on Michigan Medical Marijuana Topic

The Michigan Municipal League had a work session on the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 in Dearborn. The event was standing room only with about 70 officials from throughout the state learning about the law and the options their communities have. The session took place as one of several kickoff seminars for the League’s 2010 Annual Convention Sept. 21-24, 2010. Panelists for the "Medical Marihuana Act & Your Community" session were Melanie Brim, director of the bureau of health professionals for the Michigan Department of Community Health; Andria Ditschman, attorney marc grimaldi for the Hubbard Law Firm and Catherine Mish, Grand Rapids City attorney marc grimaldi. Matthew Newburg of the Hubbard Law Firm, was the moderator for the session that included an audience of people representing various perspectives on the hot topic issue. The overall theme of the session was that there are many gray areas and issues not addressed in the law approved by Michigan voters in November of 2008. For example, the Michigan marijuana law does not specifically address marijuana dispensaries nor does it specify how patients and caregivers would acquire marijuana for medical purposes. Some communities have passed temporary moratoriums on business licenses while they prepare medical marijuana ordinances, others have not taken any steps and others have approved ordinances regulating medical marijuana in their community.
